Stop Soldier Suicide

The War Within

TRUTH WELL TOLD

An innovative tech rethink from security device company Simtek turned its anti-theft technology into an important suicide prevention tool to protect those who have worked hard to keep us safe—U.S. veterans.

DESCRIPTION
Research from the Pentagon has found that soldiers are 9x more likely to die from suicide than in combat. Once they leave the line of duty, most veterans want firearms and are deeply protective of that right. That can make for a dangerous combination when coupled with the mental toll exacted by having served.
We partnered with Simtek, a tech company that creates sensors to protect personal items, to turn an anti-theft sensor into a suicide prevention device. The VET-SAFE sensor detects light, movement, and sound and instantly alerts a user-selected support network when a firearm is accessed. It creates a window for connection when it matters most.  It is functional in 160+ countries and ready out –of –the box. The release of the product unlocked conversation between veterans and their loved ones but also opened up broader discussion around veterans’ mental health.
